Sir John Soane Museum is the oldest of the existing specialized Memorial Houses of Architects.
John Soane – neoclassic, who designed of the famous Bank of England (demolished in 1920 ), the dining room at 10 Downing Street ( residence of the Prime Minister ) and many other public and residential buildings. His works influenced commercial architecture in many ways.
The buildings where the Museum is located were also rebuilt by Soane in 1792-1794. The Museum Complex includes the house, museum itself and the library. The museum holds unique collections which were started by Soane in 1804. The collection includes antique artifacts gathered from Egypt, Greece, Rome; architectural drawings, books, Soans’ personal archives, sculptures, more than 250 pieces of furniture. Soans’ original drawings alone number 8,044.
